The Bethel Food Shelf received some welcome attention recently. On October 27th, former area resident and South Royalton High School graduate, Trina Cutler, stopped by the Bethel Area Rotary Club to donate $1,000 from the Portneuf Club of Pocatello, Idaho. Cutler said that her club president, Stacy Hernandez, has designated the club to donate to area, national, and international charitable and relief projects. Cutler was well aware of the hardships in Central Vermont caused by Tropical Storm Irene through communication with local family and friends. The club agreed to donate to the food shelf for their national charitable project.
The food shelf also received a visit from Congressman Peter Welch on Saturday, October 22. Director of the Bethel Food Shelf, Mary Ann Batcheller, said that Welch was very interested in people affected by the flood and in volunteers with the recovery effort. The Vermont Food Bank sent a large truck of donated food that coincided with Welch’s visit.
Batcheller said now that the greatest need for food for flood victims has been met, the food shelf would return to its regular operating hours. She said the generosity of the community and organizations has been overwhelming.” At the time of the flood, we only had $129 in our bank account.”
